PAGB AWARDS
The L&CPU now offer a mentoring service - January 2011
We all find it hard to assess our own work. In choosing images competition entry is invaluable, help from your fellow club members is too. It all becomes harder at "D" and, naturally, "M" which represents the highest standards of photography. To help you we have assembled a team of people who have judged at National Level and have already successfully mentored PAGB distinction applicants. Read more.
The notes below first appeared here in 2009 and have just been revised (14th October 2011)
Fancy being CPAGB? The PAGB distinctions or awards are gaining in popularity. They are held for life and there is nothing more to pay after your initial assessment costs. The inclusion of PDI assessments now will make entry costs cheaper but a C in prints for example would be about £100 all in (£60 registration and the rest in printing and postage). You get one free ticket to the adjudication of which there are two per year (April and November)- further ones can be purchased and attending will be of enormous help to those being asessed in the future. The PAGB aim to not keep anyone waiting for more than one year and in 2010 an extra adjudication in the December cleared a backlog (they are popular!)
What level to apply for? C is good club level, D is acceptances in national competition and M is the highest standard. You can go for D straight away (though some advise against this) if you have already been successful in nationals or are working at that level, otherwise you must work through the levels. You can use the same material when you apply for a higher level, so your really high scoring work at C you might re-use for D and likewise D for M.
Another good feature is that all your images are assessed separately as if they are in a competition - you do not have to present a coherent panel of work.
Now, you have to "pre-qualify". It is up to your Federation to decide what this means and at the June 2010 L&CPU Exec Meeting it was decided to change our criteria so that you no longer need to have entered our Annuals to "pre-qualify". You now need only to have been an active club member for 2 years (C) or three years (D). Applications are made first to our Comp Sec, Henry Mullarkey, you can write to him (see Directory - your club secretary has one) or email, giving your club name (and address of course) and he will check that you qualify amd send you a form to complete and send on to the PAGB.
There are AV awards too!
For full details look at the PAGB website, under PAGB Merit Awards.
Talk to your fellow club members who hold the awards - some clubs have self-help groups about this. We are hoping to incorporate some help into a future L&CPU event.
Newsletters 14 & 15and 21 above have information to help too.
ACT QUICKLY - These awards are so popular that entry lists fill months before the official closure date.
